Mr. Seahorse

We happened upon this Eric Carle book we had never read before at the library. Mr. Seahorse became an instant fave around the House of Halpin. We read it so many times, that I figured I probably should incorporate it into our school day. So we crafted and researched all about the mysterious creature called the seahorse.

First we crafted. And Yaya crafted with us.

We traced Mr. Seahorse himself on to paper towels, cut him out and watercolored him to look like the cover of the book.
One of us spent less time painting and more time conducting an imaginary orchestra.

Here the little guys are, swimming around on our bulletin board. O's is right in the middle. He did such a great job!. Mine and Nosy's are pretty splotchy (I was too busy snapping photos and keeping Noah focused), but Yaya's is superb.

We researched afterwards. The book is about how the daddy seahorse carries his babies in a pouch on his belly until they are ready to emerge into the world, kangaroo style. Mr. Seahorse encounters many other male sea creatures that also care for their eggs or young. We found fascinating video footage on YouTube of actual baby seahorses exiting the daddy's pouch. We were amazed!

How fun is that...we're going to have to look for that book. We love finding books by authors we know, that we haven't read yet. :o)
Love the paper towel seahorses. So creative.

That is such a great book. I love the craft that you did for it. Maybe one day Elias, Zach and I will have to do that craft. Thanks for the idea!
