So here we are, muddling our way through making puppy cookies for our dear friend, Kirby, as a part of our Dog Day celebration. How hard could it be? It was a bit of a challenge, but we had a blast doing it!
Homemade Dog Treat Recipe
3/4 cup hot water
1/3 cup margarine
1/2 cup powdered milk
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg, beaten
3 cups whole wheat flour
Variation: increase margarine to 1/2 cup and add 2 teaspoons sugar
In large bowl pour hot water over the margarine. Stir in powdered milk, salt, and egg. Add flour, 1/2 cup at a time. Knead for a few minutes to form stiff dough. Pat or roll to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into bone shapes. Bake at 325 degrees for 50 minutes. Cool. They will dry out quite hard.

You may notice our "double boiler" type set-up of mixing bowls. This is not called for by the recipe, however, my two darling kiddos could not select a single mixing bowl for the lives of them. Thus, we used both. It worked out just hunky dory.

This dough needed a lot of "spanking" to prepare it for rolling out. We all had the giggles!

The mixing was no problem. It was the rolling out of the dough. This dough had a mind of its own! As soon as we would get it somewhat flattened, it would sneak right back up into a mound. It refused to become the required 1/2 inch thick. We got a great workout taking turns with the rolling pin.

We finally realized Owie needed his proper baking outfit on. Things went much better after he was properly garbed.

It was not long before Noah decided to taste test the dough. He picked up a chunk, rolled it around in flour and popped it in his mouth. From the reaction, I think this recipe is better suited for pups!

Teamwork! Owen was giving Noah a lesson in dough preparation. I love how attentive Noah is to O's instructions.

The most handsome big boy chef in town...

and his most darling assistant.
Note to self:
Next time we are planning on being elbow deep in flour, save getting dressed for afterwards. A wardrobe change was incorporated into Dog Day after we had popped the treats in the oven!

Oh my goodness! So fun and hilarious! Love all the pics. The one of Noah taking a bite, the "spanking the dough" ones... Looks like a great time was had by all.
