Surprise at the Fire Station

What little boy isn't fascinated with firefighters? We had so much fun learning all about the profession in Libby's unit of summer school. So much fun, in fact, that we decided to take the lesson one step further, while doing a little church outreach at the same time.

The Boys worked hard baking dozens of sugar cookies: firemen, dalmatians and firetrucks all adorned with red sugar sprinkles.

By now, they have done this so many times, they almost don't need my help any more! What great little bakers!

Once the cookies cooled off enough, O and I bundled them all up to deliver to the fire station near by. (Noah sadly missed out due to scheduling conflicts and a much-needed nap.) We fully expected to just hand over our cookie tin, tell the receptionist a little about our church, provide some church business cards, and then be on our way. Were we surprised when a real life firefighter met us at the door and offered a tour of the station! We heartily took him up on his offer. Not only did we get to tour the firehouse and hear about life as a firefighter straight from the man himself, but O got to pretend to drive the firetruck, sit in the back of an ambulance, and touch as many tools, hoses, instruments as he pleased. In typical O fashion, his sweet face was completely solemn as he experienced all of this wonderfulness. But you can bet that he has talked non-stop about each detail ever since! It was great to get to talk to the fireman about our church too and personally invite him and his comrades to join us for worship.

We were invited to come back any time to look around again. The next time we bake goodies, we'll have to remember to swing back by the fire station...with Noah this time too!
